It has been suggested to me of personal status cases. that there will certainly be many such cases pending at the end of the war in Shanghai etc. and an under- taking on lines of paragraph 3 of the draft note, your telegram No. 1396, seems highly desirable.

I think we are unlikely to get anything on the lines

If not we of paragraph 1 and 2 of that draft. might try whether the Chinese would be prepared to re-affirm in some way paragraph 7 to the end of the group undec: ? draft agreement 7 of May 4th 1931.

This might (Sir M. Lampa on's despatch No: 705 of 1931). be better than nothing.
